I think I’ve finished!

What a good feeling when you are putting the last few stitches in a quilt. The binding is all stitched down, and that certainly took a while. “Why don’t you sew it on the machine?”, DH asked me. Why not indeed? Tradition, perhaps? Because this is the way I always do it, stitch the double fold on by machine, then pin and stitch the other side by hand. There is something quite soothing doing the hand stitching. That job out of the way, the label was next. I drew and embroidered the label yesterday. Perhaps “embroidered” is aiming a bit high, I’m not really an embroiderer. I used chain stitch around the heart, and back stitch to accentuate the writing. Very simple, but I’m pleased with my effort, so that is the main thing. This afternoon I stitched the label on the back of the quilt. I think I’ve finally finished!

I love the feel of a nice new quilt as I work on it. In fact I love the whole process, getting an idea, sorting out the fabrics, cutting and stitching, right through to the binding and the label. With having unexpected time off work this last week, I had lots of time to sit and complete the hand work, so it was completed nice and early. This quilt will be presented to my daughter in two weeks time, so I will show the final photos then.

It must be a boy thing Jenny ... why stitch by hand my husband says also. I love to stitch the binding down by hand - it is relaxing and gives a fantastic sense of accomplishment that the quilt is done! Can't wait to see the pics of the quilt.

I agree with you about hand stitching the binding. This is a process I really enjoy - it is like saying "good bye" to the quilt. Happy stitching!
