Thank you for Daisy

Joy just loves turtles, and has a collection of hundreds of them at home. Not real ones, of course, but toy turtles in all shapes and sizes. I made her a soft cuddly green turtle a while ago which she promptly named Daisy. As soon as I saw the pattern in a craft magazine, I knew I had to make it for Joy.

“Do you like cheesecake?”, Joy asked me during the week. Of course I do! She then presented me with a lovely home made cheesecake to take home for dessert. “Thank you for making me Daisy”, she said. What a lovely surprise that was. We made short work of the cheesecake, it was delicious. Thanks, Joy.

Daisy the Turtle

Daisy the turtle is finally finished, and now has a new home with my colleague Joy. Joy is a real turtle lover and has 400 or so at home, mostly little tiny ornamental ones, and some stuffed toy turtles. Lucky Joy also has some rather nice turtle jewellery items as well, brooches, pendants and charms for her bracelets.

The pattern for Daisy came from Homespun magazine, No 76, Vol 10.9, and was designed by the duo of “Audrey and Maude”. I just had to make one for Joy, after all, if she can collect 400 turtles, she really deserves another one to add to her collection. The body slips inside the shell, which is stitched together, and finished off with blanket stitch.

Joy cuddled her new toy all day at work, then took Daisy home and put her on the bed with the other stuffed toys. The name Daisy was a obvious choice as I had used a pretty daisy fabric for the shell. It was fun to make, and a pleasure to give it away to such a loving home.

The naked turtle

The monthly “Stitching Monday” group has started up again, so it was great to catch up with everyone again. As usual, everyone worked on their own projects. Sewing machines were humming, and blocks were laid out and assembled. A couple of the ladies were stitching hexagons together, and there was some hand appliqué going on and a quilt binding being stitched down.

I gave the sewing machine a rest and took my light box along instead. Alex Anderson’s “12 Days of Redwork” was a recent free download from her site, so I took my cut cream squares along and traced them out. These designs came with centre point marked so that made it easy to centre the design in the squares. The plan is to take these away on our upcoming holiday. Much better to have something prepared and not actually have time to get any stitching done. Who knows what the weather may turn out like and we may be stuck inside.

Next job was to stuff my green turtle. This will be a surprise for Joy, a colleague who has an amazing collection of turtles, over 400 at last count. Most of them are small ornamental turtles but she has some soft toy turtles as well. The pattern came from Homespun magazine and I still need to construct the shell. So at the moment it is a naked turtle!

It’s not as if I need another project, but this certainly looks fun, and I know Joy will love it.
