Quilt Binding

Five days away in the caravan for a long weekend can generate a lot of laundry.  Especially when the sheets and towels were added into the mix.  So that was my focus in the morning – get that washing done and hang it out in the nice warm sunshine.  And I even ironed it all in the afternoon – so I’m feeling rather pleased with myself.

With that job done I could finally get on with machining the binding on my grand-daughters horse quilt.  Luckily I had planned ahead and the binding was all prepared and ready and waiting to be attached.  I don’t know what others do, but I stitch it on with my walking foot and then carefully trim the excess backing and batting off.

So now I’m up to pinning the binding over to the back and and stitching it in place.  This is a large quilt, so its going to take me ages, I’m sure.  But never mind, it’s quite a restful thing to be doing, stitching the binding down, no matter how long it takes.  It will be completed and all wrapped up by Christmas, of course.

My hand stitching isn't so good now, so I do a binding with a flange, on wall hangings, table toppers, and sometimes on bags. The horse quilt , what blocks, and super fabrics together.

Your photo shows just how relaxing it is to hand stitch. :)

That quilting is quite amazing! Hand sewing the binding on is a great way to appreciate it.

Good to hear it didn't take too long to catch up after being away so you could get to your binding... you've got a very comfy stitching spot there...hope you're making good progress with it.

Thank you all. I'm off to spend time with the Sew Wot ladies today so will sit and stitch my binding there as we all have a good catch up. Every little bit helps.

I do my binding the same way as you. It seems to work for me too. Like you, I find the hand stitching rather relaxing. You can tune out and it is so good to know the end is nearly there. I think you granddaughter will be delighted with her gift.

Sewing the binding is the final step and brings relaxation and contentment, with such a sense of achievement as you stitch the label in with the binding. It doesn't matter how long it takes, just smile.
