October UFO Night

Friday night was the Remnants UFO Night and eight keen members of the Town and Country Quilt Club gathered to spend a few hours working together.  As usual, we all brought along a plate of food for a shared meal.  This is always tasty, and this time we feasted on chicken and salad, egg sandwiches, asparagus rolls, mince savouries and quiche.  Plus copious cups of coffee to see us through the evening.

Mary is still working happily on Kaye’s Tui quilt, and she is now doing cross hatch hand quilting.  How lovely to have such a helpful friend, we told Kaye, especially one like Mary who does such beautiful hand work.

Both Kaye and Sarah were slowly stitching their own versions of the Camilla Watson designed cat appliqué quilt.  This is quite a slow project, as the fabric is carefully cut away and hand appliquéd down.  You can just see the outline of a cat’s paw appearing in Sarah’s version.

Wool projects seem very popular and Kathy was tracing out pieces for the August block of “Bertie’s Year”, designed by Bonnie Sullivan.  This was purchased as a “Block of the Month” project from Grandmother's Garden Quilt Shop.  Bertie, I was told, is the bird who appears in all the blocks.

Another one doing tracing was Kathy.  As she had just finished one of her UFOs, it was time to start a new project, she declared.  And why not, the UFOs can just quietly sit where they are.  I have long admired this lovely Christmas quilt, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and it is so pretty,  made up of  both pieced and stitchery blocks

I was also doing handwork.  The first job was to attach the last sleeve to my little kiddie jumper, then I picked up all the stitches around the neck and did a couple of rows. It will be easy to finish knitting the neck band at home sitting in front of the TV in the evening.  Then it was yo-yo time.  I shouldn’t really be starting my snowman yo-yo just yet, as my Christmas reindeer is still all in pieces, waiting to be assembled.  But yo-yos are such a good take along project and I can’t always be bothered lugging my heavy sewing machine along for just a couple of hours.

Sandra had several projects on the go, and I particularly liked her black, red and white appliqué panel.   This will be made in sections and put together using the “quilt as you go” method.

Janelle's take-along project for stitching nights is her Afternoon Delight quilt.  There is only three more blocks left to appliqué, she said, but still lots more of those teeny tiny nine patch blocks to make.

With Daylight Saving the evenings are lighter for so much longer these days.   We spotted this lovely sunset out of the hall windows so I just had to step outside and take a few snaps.

With the sun finally setting, the skies darkened very quickly.  We had another cuppa, continued with our stitching, and checked out what everyone was up to.  Another very successful Remnants UFO night,  stitching together with fellow club members.
