I've completed stitching three pair of tiny felt Christmas Stockings, which were handed out at last month's quilt club meeting. Each set of stockings came with an extra strip of felt. These will be hung on the display of Christmas Trees in December, our club's entry in the Avenue of Trees.
Red, white and green
After putting my thinking cap on, I had worked out how I wanted to decorate them. They are tiny, so keep it simple, I decided. Sadly, I failed miserably with blanket stitch, so just did running stitch instead. I'm sure it's not that hard, but I just couldn't get my head around it. Maybe I'll ask the Sew Wots to show me sometime. With a bit of simple stitching, a couple of buttons, and ribbon hanging loops stitched on, they were done.
White, green and red, and I found one tiny Father Christmas looking for a new home
I can't remember when I last did some darning, but I had a hand knitted sock emergency. Most of my cozy thick socks are knitted with 8 ply wool, ply 4 ply sock yarn, and these are hole free, so far. But I did knit a couple of pairs using 12 ply wool in the early days, and one of these pairs developed a hole under the heel. There was only one thing to do, try to darn the hole up
That's no good, is it.
I had a very small ball of grey acrylic which toned in quite well, and used that. No darning mushroom though - I can remember these from my childhood when my Mother expertly darned socks. I improvised and slipped a glass into the sock, and started working. I don't think I'll win any prizes for my darning prowess, but it did the job, so I'm pleased with that.
Finished is better than perfect!
I've just finished another library book, Fallen, by Karin Slaughter. I've read a lot of her books, but missed this older one somehow. It features one of my favourite detectives, Will Trent, together with Dr Sara Linton, Will's partner Faith and boss Amanda Wagner. This was such a gripping story, and I hadn't worked out the who and why as the tale progressed, as it hurtled to the climatic ending.

Cute wee Christmas Stockings and you did a good job with your darning.
I remember my dad darning holes in his socks with one of those darning mushrooms. You did a great job improvising with the glass. Your stockings are cute! How many do you have to make? I always have to watch a YouTube video about how to get started on blanket stitch. Once I get going on it, I’m fine!
Cute little stockings! Your post made me smile I always struggle with blanket stitch and never know how to start it but once i've got it Im happy to carry on! Sarah quiltingbythesea
Those stockings are adorable, Jenny! My mom did darning, and had one of those mushrooms for it. Yours looks good to me! I have liked the Will Trent books, too, but couldn't get into the TV show either!
Lovely darning on your sock, Jenny--all woven in so nicely...;))
Cute little Christmas stockings--the running stitches look great on them...
Hot and humid still here--it will be an inside day...hugs, Julierose
LOL I could not watch those movies with Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher either!! such a dumb casting move on that and on Will Trent - why do they do that. I could not watch Will Trent I tried to as I really liked the books but they changed him way too much!! I read all of Karin Slaughter's books and really like them.
Aaw the little stockings are adorable, Jenny. What a fun project. Great job on the darning and thank you for the tip on using a glass . I worked on a darning project a few weeks ago. I will remember your tip for the next project. Have a lovely day. Hugs.
I have a darning needle and ball (maybe what you called a mushroom) that were my grandmother's. I don't remember my mother ever using them. I am impressed by your sock fix. Those little stockings are adorable. Sometimes I can master a blanket stitch and other times it is a mess. Your running stitch looks just fine.
I totally agree with you re Jack Reacher, it's funny how we get an image of a favourite book character and then the movie dashes it
Cute wee stockings. And nice to see darned socks.
Lovely work on your stockings. Good to have them done so early.
No, darning is not fun, but unfortunately it has to be done.
Those stockings are precious! Your hand stitching is lovely. My husband was sharing when he was a little boy, his mama would put a light bulb in the socks that needed to be darned. You have saved what looks to be a pair of cuddly socks. :)
Wow, I think you did a great job darling your sock. I would never know there had been a hole there. My grandma used to put a light bulb in the socks when she was darning them. Also, I want to mention your pretty little Christmas socks, they are adorable. I'm sure it's going to be fun to get together with all the other ladies and see what each one has come up with in their designs.
Have a lovely week 🥰 dear blogging friend.
The stockings are so sweet. You did a great job. Kudos to you for the darning. It is something I’ve never tackled. I think you did well and no one sees the heels when in your shoes. I think movies rarely stack up against the book. I suppose we create a picture of the character in our mind’s eye that is often quite different, and as you say, are often described quite differently to the movie actor.
Nice work on the Christmas stocking decorating, and sock darning. As for the Will Trent book(s), I haven't read this one in particular, but I have read many of them, in order. Agree completely about Will's character in the book versus the TV series. Same with Angie who is much more of a slut in the book. Guess they gotta soften her to make her TV-presentable, and Will has to be inclusive for TV viewing. Disappointingly, our culture is becoming more "correct" by the day.
