It’s a Girl Thing

Today was “that” day, I was due for my annual mammogram.  Since I was diagnosed in 2016 with breast cancer, and underwent subsequent treatment, as a follow-up I have been called up for an annual mammogram.  A little momentary discomfort is a small price to pay for such great care.  Most hospital care is free here in New Zealand, and I have been very impressed (and oh so grateful) for the cancer care I have received.

As a bonus, I was treated to a mini quilt show in the breast screening rooms.  This beauty was hanging in the waiting room.  A Mariner’s Compass quilt with all those tricky points, stitched in nice restful shades of blue.

Then further round by the changing rooms there were more quilts on the walls.  Such a feast for the eyes, and both of them glowed with colour.

Two more lovely quilts

I’m not sure if these quilts were gifted to the Breast Screening rooms, or if local quilters come and change them periodically, either way, I certainly appreciated seeing them hanging up.

Procedure over, it was time to rest and recover over morning tea, so we went to one of the local cafes.  Coffee and a scone each, cheese scone for me, and date and orange for Robin, nice and tasty indeed.

The results will take a couple of weeks, I was told, so fingers crossed that all remains well.

I hope your results are great! I did not realise you had had breast cancer. It must be nerve- wracking each year at the checkup mammorgram. I went for a routine mammorgram in November and was diagnosed. Waiting for radiation appointment dates at the moment. Sometimes I think the waiting for appointments is the worst. Thankful for craft projects to keep me occupied.

It’s so good to know you get such good care in NZ. All the best with your results...
Such beautiful quilts on display...
Lovely to enjoy a coffee and scone afterwards with Robin.

I remember when I had my last one, and they told me because of my AGE, it would be the last, there were wall hangings there, they were so beautiful. So much prettier than the bare walls.

How wonderful that quilts were on display at your medical facility. They do bring a bit of comfort when one has to go through such tests. I hope you have a lovely week, Jenny and that you hear great news from the tests soon.

I go in for yearly screenings but here in my town I normally get the results back the same day if the radiologist that reads them is working or the next day if he is super busy - I wonder why you have to wait that would drive me crazy! My screening is covered under preventive care and I pay nothing for it but do pay for medical insurance

How lovely to have quilts displayed at your medical centre - strikes me as comforting. That's a lovely treat following your procedure. ^^

I'm so glad you're being diligent about following-up on regular check-ups. My breast cancer was diagnosed in 2013, and I too am grateful for the treatment I received. I LOVE that your screening center displays quilts! In 2011, before I ever knew I'd have breast cancer, I made a wall hanging quilt "Save Second Base" that looked like a baseball diamond, and gave it to my screening center. I have no idea whatever became of it. As much as I'd like to approach our local imaging place to ask if they'd hang quilts, I'm already guessing they'd say no. Not only do they screen for BC, but they also do ultrasounds, and other diagnostic procedures. I really appreciate that no one leaves a BC screening without knowing the results. Thankfully, in January it was "all clear." I hope you hear the same.

The annual screening is important, and I pray your results are great. Kudos to the hospital for hanging the gorgeous quilts in the waiting area. They had a personal touch.

Good girl getting that done--I had mine in January--had to go back for 2nd looksee--but all was okay-- just denseness.
Glad you got a nice treat afterwards--sending good thoughts for a good outcome, Jenny.

Hi Marie, do hope you read this:
I don't have your email address as you come through as "anonymous". Could you send me an email to romanyquilting@gmail.com please. I remember making and sending you the heart cushion, didn't realise it was seven years ago!

Beautiful quilts to look at. Good luck with your results. It’s now something we all should be doing.

I hope the results go well Jenny and that it's not as long as a 2-week wait; mine came through the next day last time - I guess it depends how busy they are. Nice to see the quilts in the waiting area :-)

Jenny it is so good that you go in for follow-up checkups, I'm proud of you for taking good care of yourself. Thanks for sharing the pretty quilts with us too.

Good for you going in for checkups. I hope your results are excellent. We have a mobile mammogram site that comes around every two years.

God bless.

Breast screening is such an important checkup and even more so in your case. Better a little inconvenience than treatment. And how lovely to see all the quilts around the rooms.
Fingers crossed for a GREAT result too...xox
