Handwork and Books

I've been doing a bit of this and a bit of that all week.  Remember those blue stars and hearts I've been working on for a secret project?  I've finished stitching the binding down on the stars, just need to do the binding on the hearts now.  I'm not sure when I will be meeting up with the recipients to hand these over though, could be a while.  But I'll keep them safe and sound and share photos when they finally go to their new homes.

I've also done a bit more knitting on my summer top.  This generally gets worked on in the evenings while I'm watching TV, usually during the commercial break as I like to concentrate on the programmes.  So it is growly slowly, one row at a time.

It's coming along slowly

And I've been doing a little big hand stitching on my beautiful Land and Sea Panel today - this has been neglected for much too long.  There is so much of interest to work on, I'm currently stitching around an orca.  And of course there are plenty of birds, fish and background just waiting to be stitched.  I'm working on this as a long term project.

Stitching around the orca

Of course, I've been reading too.  I had a reading emergency recently when I was out of library books, and couldn't get to the library straight away.  So I had a look through the book shelves and selected one of Robin's books, so I didn't get withdrawal symptoms.  Something completely different for me,  The War of the Running Dogs, by Noel Barber.  This told the story of the Malayan War, and how the communists were defeated.  I have to admit I knew nothing at all about this war, I was a child during those years, left school and started my first job in 1960.  That's a long time ago, isn't it.

An interesting and informative read

I finally made it to the library, taking my library bag with me.  I remember stitching this panel quite some years ago when we still lived in Upper Hutt.  Oh look,  some of my favourite authors and I added Wuthering Heights too!

My Library Bag

Two books from the library came home with me, and were devoured.  I enjoy reading Lynda La Plante's character of Jane Tennison, a woman police officer climbing up the ranks, not an easy task, made harder with jealousy and opposition from her male colleagues.  Robin Cook's medical mysteries are often about a dangerous killer virus or something similar sweeping the world.  Charlatans was a little different and told the story of the dirty dealings of lucrative health supplement business, and the steps they would take to protect their business.

Two recent reads from the library

So that's what I've been up to lately, stitching, knitting and reading.

Your summer top is growing. Such a pretty pattern with that yarn. I have a bookshelf full of books I have not read yet so no chance of running out of reading material any time soon. I’m looking forward to seeing your completed quilts. Your hand quilting project is an interesting panel ….lots to look at as you stitch. Have a good week!

Love your land and sea panel. In 2009 I came back from New Zealand with a panel of NZ birds and wildlife. I've finally managed to layer it up but haven't actually started quilting it yet! I have been doing other stitching though. At the moment I'm having a go at making a crochet hexagon cardigan! All you manage to accomplish puts me to shame. I really must try harder. I enjoy seeing the progress on your knitting. If I may ask... is there a reason you're not using round needles? I've only used them once, to make a baby afghan, but might they be more appropriate for a larger piece like you're making? Just curious. Your hand quilting on your panel is nice too. I like the theme of it. Are you quilting through a quilt sandwich? Do you have something in mind to do with it when you're finished? How fun to read one of Robin's books! I enjoyed seeing the price too. I'm glad you've found some good library books to read. If you enjoy the sort of book where a woman is in a leadership position, you'd enjoy one I recently finished: "The Knapdale Murders" by Daniel Sellers. The story takes place in Scotland.

I haven't seen that one by Robin Cook, need to check out our library listings. It's always good to have books on hand, I have small and large puzzle books, and have a small one in my " hospital bag" !!! I learnt after that last trip to Wellington when I finished the whole small book to have plenty of empty pages. Lovely panel, it is bright and beautiful.

Your knitting looks like the perfect way to pass the time while the TV runs commercials! And that panel is pretty with your quilting, too. Thanks for the book recommendations - I think I would like the Jane Tennison book especially. I'm going to go check what they have at my library!

I love seeing your progress on your pretty summer top. I have a few "emergency" books that I pick up at the library's giveaway cart or the travel/book restaurant we go to on the drive to my daughter so there is always something new to read that I might like if I run out.

You’re keeping busy with all your different doings. Mick enjoys reading Linda La Plante novels. I haven’t read any. Your summer top is growing nicely.

Your top is going to be so pretty once you finish it. The panel is beautiful and will certainly take some time to quilt.

God bless.
