Binding and Knitting

I attended a Stitching Day on Saturday, organised by my quilt club.  It's a very casual affair, a small friendly group of us go along, coffee and tea provided, we take a packed lunch, and work on whatever project we wish.  I find it too difficult to unplug and transport my sewing machine anywhere these days, so take hand work with me.  And stitching a quilt binding down is perfect for me on these stitching days.  You may remember I am doing secret sewing with blue hearts and stars - these two quilts have now been commercially quilted, and I have stitched the bindings on.  So I took one of these to work on.  Not quite finished but I made a good start.

I love my binding clips

It's always interesting seeing what the others are doing too.  Sewing machines were whirring away, and one member was sewing the binding down on a very special baby quilt.  She was waiting for the imminent arrival of her great grand baby!  And another had brought along a yet to be started project from years ago.  She had changed her mind about what she wanted to do, and spent the morning  trimming a big pile of 6in squares into hexagons.  That certainly took some patience.

We had a visit from a good looking man in a uniform too.  He walked into our hall looking for his fellow Search and Rescue colleagues, who were having a meeting in the area somewhere.  No we certainly weren't SAR people, just looking at us he would be able to see that none of us were fit and agile enough to climb hills with a heavy back pack and rescue those in need!  We are quilters, we told him, so he went on his way to find his friends.

I've been knitting away as well, usually in the evenings when the TV is on.  A few rows here and there and it soon adds up.  My summer cotton top is slowly growing, I've finished the back and working on the front now.  I don't really like the feel of knitting with cotton, it certainly has a much different feel to wool.

I'm knitting this one for me

And I've also knitted some baby beanies, which will be donated.  I used three different patterns, to see which one I preferred.  I think I'd like to try a 2X2 rib pattern next with a folded  brim, I'm sure I will be able to find a free pattern on the internet.

Baby beanies

I met up with my daughter Nicky for lunch last Thursday and she was looking at my hands, and commented that my fingers were all nice and straight.  Nicky has several crooked fingers due to arthritis, sadly.  I feel she had a double whammy from both sides of the family, my mother had bad arthritis in her hands and elsewhere, and her father also suffers too.  My arthritis is in my back and neck, which does get sore as I'm getting older, but I'm so thankful that my hands are not affected.  We certainly need our hands and our eyes for our craft work, don't we.

I don’t like lugging my heavy sewing machine to our guild sewing days either and tend to just bring my hand sewing along. Hand stitching a binding is a good project —easy to do while you chat with your friends as they sew.

Hi Jenny--I use my binder clips a lot, too--for both quilting and journaling to
hold heavier glued items in place while they dry;)))
i never really enjoyed knitting with cotton either--feels so very different in your hands than soft wool...You are making progress with your sweater--it'll be nice for the summertime...
Nice to have luncheon with your daughter; ours came down for tom's 87th birthday this past Friday --we toasted him with some Prosecco and cheesecake...fun times...hugs, Julierose

I'm of a similar mind when it comes to participating in quilt group activities; it's much easier to take a hand project than haul a sewing machine. How timely that you have binding to hand sew down! Such is not always the case. I have a hand-piecing project that goes with me, though it's getting large enough now, with columns of blocks sewn together, that it's becoming a lapfull. I think it's wonderful you're knitting a summer top for yourself - very pretty yarn! - and understand the lack of "stretch" to cotton. Last week I knitted a Tiny Doll with cotton and he turned out much larger than the other dolls! Love the beanies too! I must ask... did you make it through "Wuthering Heights" again? I checked out the book to listen to, and realized I'd never read it!

yes we need our hands. Mine ache but not too crooked. My feet though little bumps and curves on the toes because of arthritis. It is good to get out and see your friends. I never liked bringing my machine with - it is hard to visit with a machine going and I would never get anything done that way.

Arthritis is really challenging to deal with, especially for crafty folks. I love taking hand stitching with me too for stitching events. I'm wondering about the difference between cotton and wool for knitting?

I love using clips now for binding. So much easier than pins. I look forward to seeing those secret quilts. Your cotton knitting is so pretty. Those baby beanies are cute. Did you like any of those patterns? I have arthritis in both my thumbs and my spine. I can keep the thumbs under control by switching up the crafts I work on. My spine has caused 4 herniated discs which tend to cause me endless problems periodically. I have to keep up with my exercises in order to keep any pain in check. My mom was riddled with arthritis as she aged so I am not surprised that I am also.

I think our Bernina machines are both the QE 440, and mine accumulated kilograms each month when I went to quilting groups, and I,too, found it just too heavy. But solid and certainly made to last. The quilt quilting looks so beautiful and a misty backing is lovely. My Dad had arthritis, my Mum had long slender straight fingers. I inherited the crooked little finger from her Mum, it skipped a generation!!!

That sounds like a fun day, Jenny - stitching with friends! I'm looking forward to seeing your secret project when you can share it!

Your day of stitching with your friends sounds delightful, Jenny. It would be much easier to do hand stitching than machine work, me thinks. Love the professional quilting on your secret project and as always your knitting is lovely. You're very fortunate arthritis doesn't affect your hands. Arthritis catches up with me when I've been hand stitching, knitting or crocheting a lot when I forget to take breaks. I must say, I live the quilt in your header.

Sounds like a great day Jenny! Cute hats!

I don’t usually take my machine to anything anymore. I have a great set up at home and it is easier to just leave it at home. Love your projects.

Cotton sometimes feels a bit greasy to me, if that makes any sense at all.

God bless.

Hand stitching sounds like a great idea. Sewing machines are heavy! I use those clips for binding too. Before I discovered the clips, I used to thread baste the binding before stitching it down! Glad you had a nice day together with your quilting friends. So sorry about the arthritis.

I just read your latest posts, Jenny. Loved the Rose Challenge for the Sew Wots and what a pretty quilt lunch got served on. Yes, hope nothing was spilled. How great to travel as well and I enjoyed seeing the photos you shared. Love the idea of this little quilting group. Nice to see your lovely knitting too. Arthritis was in my ex's family but fortunate neither of my girls have it so far.

So good to see you busy doing wonderful things. I can't wait for the secret reveal!!!! And I love your summer cotton sweater; very cool variegated yarn. I like to knit; it is so soothing to do it. But I have never been able to finish a project. I like to join friends for stitching and get inspired and encouraged and share our tales. I am glad you have a group.

It is always fun to see what others are up to. The fibers that are using for your summer top are so gorgeous and the hats are precious. It sounds like you are staying busy. Have a lovely week, Jenny.

Hand work is ideal as a take along project. Lots of progress on your projects.

Hand stitching is so much easier to take along to stitching days. The only place I take my machine to is Scrub Stitchin. Binding was the perfect project. I can’t wait for the great reveal.
