I've been out and about lately, going here, and going there. I was at a craft group last week, and we meet in a beautiful old property called Thompson House, home of a former doctor who lived and worked here. I believe it has been gifted to the community and groups can hire the rooms for meetings.
Thompson House
One of the ladies there that afternoon teaches bobbin lace. She had all sorts of exquisite samples on display. It's such beautiful fine work, but not something I would have the patience for.

Melanie had been working on signs of the zodiac and had one for Libra, the Scales of Justice. That's my sign, I told her, so she very generously gifted it to me. Here it is at home, pinned up on one of the spools on my thread spool wall hanging in my sewing room.

I'm a member of Age Concern, and go there weekly for my easy balance and exercise class. They also hold meetings about various subjects of interest to older people, and last week held a movie afternoon, free for the members. That was fun, there were decorations and balloons galore in the room, and we were treated to bags of popcorn or chippies, tea, coffee and juice was available, and we were presented with small bags of liquorioce allsorts and jaffas. The film was called "Thelma" and told the story of an elderly lady who was scammed into sending money, supposably to help her grandson, and the police couldn't help her. So Thelma took matters into her own hands, and with the help of an elderly friend and his mobility scooter, tracked the scammers down, got into their computer, and with telephone help from her grandson, managed to transfer her money back into her account!
Don't mess with Thelma
And to help with me getting out and about, I'm pleased to say that I passed my 80th driving assessment, I was able to apply a couple of months early. Here in New Zealand drivers have to get a medical clearance to keep driving at 75, 80, and every two years after that. I went to have an eye test at the opticians, then had an appointment with the doctor, who asked me questions as he filled in several pre printed pages. "I know you don't have diabetes, and your heart is good", he said as he worked his way through the form. That was good to know. Tick, tick, tick, he went through the questions, then, "all done", he told me. At my 75th assessment, our previous doctor had asked me all sorts of questions, including counting back from 100 by 7, and other general knowledge questions, so I was a bit worried about what my current doctor would ask me. "I know you", he said, "and I know there is nothing wrong with your memory". Whew.... all that worry about nothing!
I've had to do some car stuff this month, things that Robin used to take care of. Such as apply for the annual car registration, get a Warrant of Fitness, and the car insurance is due as well. And last time I filled the car up, I wanted to use up some of the petrol vouchers I have, so called into one of the local service stations. When I went in to settle up, the attendant was rather worried. "Did you know you've just filled your car with diesel?" he asked. I assured him that everything is fine, my little car runs on diesel, which is quite unusual here for small cars. Although Robin used to top my car up for me, he impressed on me not to put petrol in the tank, which would ruin the engine! Just as well I took that lesson to heart.

Congrats on passing your driving "exam" again! The film looks fun. But that bobbin threadding craft looks scary to me. I'll stick with quilting and piecing... and seriously appreciate those who love to do that kind of fiber art.
How lovely to be gifted the bobbin lace. I once had a little try at a demonstration, but like you, don’t need any more crafts. The movie afternoon sounds like it was fun. You are doing so well, accomplishing things that you have never needed to do before. It goes to show you are stronger than you realise.
We have a house like that here! Likely a doctor built it, as I recall.
Good work passing your testing. Joe is coming up on that!
Congrats on picking up all the jobs that your Robin used to do; I myself worry about just that if anything-"God forbid" should happen to my Tom...congrats on the renewed driver's license too. All good things;))) Hugs, Julierose
So wonderful to have been gifted the home to the community and you’ve been enjoying some really fun things there.
That was a lovely to be given the Libra tatted piece.
You clever girl sorting all for the car and passing your license again.
so far here in Arkansas we do not need to take test at certain ages to keep our license and I think mine right now is good until I am 82 but would need to check that. That is a pretty house for meetings and I like looking at the lace and saw a video on how to make it once and it looked rather difficult to me.
Well done Jenny, that driver's licence test, we both have had to have it every 2 years , and our Dr has us do a test with the practice nurse first, Draw a clock, remember a name and address, name animals as many as you can ( trick here is to start from A B C etc) stand on tiptoes and more. Bobbin lace, I would not manage that beautiful craft, but what a gorgeous gift, I am sure you will have this mounted on fabric and hung somewhere for all to admire. XXX
The Thompson House looks like a lovely place to meet. The lacework is amazing and what a treasure to be gifted a piece. Thelma sounds like a fabulous movie; glad to hear that Thelma got the upper hand on the scammers. I am so glad all went well with the driving evaluation. Robin is smiling down on you proudly from Heaven. Warm gentle hugs.
Thank you Janice, I'm not really "strong" as you say, sometimes I feel so emotional and miserable.
I’ve seen bobbin lace demonstrations, and bobbins just fly in experienced hands. Congratulations on passing your driver’s physical. I’ll admit that I gasped when you mentioned the diesel: I was relieved that you hadn’t made a mistake.
You passed all those hurdles with flying colours! Well done! One day at a time, Jenny. Sending congratulatory and comforting hugs your way. That lace making looks very complicated and time consuming. Nice to have some crafting time with your friends. Gail
What a lovely place to have a craft meeting. The house looks very inviting. Glad you passed your driving evaluation.
God bless.
Well done. I got my 80 Licence a few months back. I wasn't asked any silly questions and had already passed the eyesight part after cataract surgery.
Grey power made a fuss about the questions people were being asked so some doctors just have a chat with you instead.
Lovely lace.
Bobbin lace is gorgeous - lucky you to get some - I tried it years ago - too much concentration when I was still working and now?? nah - cant be bothered I guess.
Well done on passing your test - we have similar rests here - but that one counting backwards by 7 is tricky - even counting forward by 7 needs some concentration!
You really got me thinking with that counting back from 100 by 7s. But I love that you were successful in getting your license renewed. Kudos to you. I wish we had a group like yours for all us aging folks. Such great ideas from the movie to movement. Thinking of you. Take care.
Robin did a good job of training you and you paid attention! Your car thanks you. Congratulations on renewing your license! The lace gift is gorgeous. Thanks for the update.
That looks like a lovely day out. A beautiful building.
Well done passing the test.
Yes, we must get the fuel right!!!
I think you are doing so well these days, Jenny. I think of you often as I face a few challenges here. Meanwhile, well done on the testing...I can't do that count backwards thing so would fail, and that group get together sounds like fun. I worry about myself in regards to such things.
It's wonderful to know you're getting out and about. The house you visited to see bobbin lacemaking is lovely. I have tried making bobbin lace myself (there isn't any "thread craft" I haven't tried). While I was successful at making some edging that I later sewed into the collar of a blouse I made, I quickly realized how much skill it requires to make beautiful pieces. It's nice that you were gifted a pretty piece. And yay for getting your driving license renewed! That's so important to keeping one's freedom and independence. Good for you to have all your smarts too! :-) We also want to hang on to those as long as possible!
