Green is for May

The chosen colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) for May is green.   First I stitched my easy peasy black and white boys blocks, using two shades of green.  I had run out of the original black and white fabric and couldn't find any more at the LQS.  So I compromised, and I think the newly purchased fabric will work fine if I mix the blocks up when they are assembled.

Next I stitched some framed four patches, using up the 2.5in squares that I have in a bag.  Despite stitching Hollow Nines last year, and framed four patches this year, there are still lots of those little squares left.  But I'm doing my best to make them all go away.

Checking through these blocks which I've stitched so far, there are lots of pink and floral fabrics.  So I've decided to split the blocks into two groups, one for a girl using the pretty ones, and the remaining group for a boy.  That will use up even more of those pesky squares.

I've also been doing some secret sewing for a birthday quilt, using greens and pinks, and cut out some applique shapes for the border.  Gemma is always interested in anything put on the floor for a photo shoot, and checked them out for me.  Yes, she decided, they look OK.

Gemma approves of the flowers and leaves

Work has started on the applique borders, guess it will take me a while to stitch all these down.  And it's just as well that the birthday girl shows no interest in the blog, otherwise it wouldn't be a surprise.

Here we go, around the border

It’s so good of Gemma to give her sniff of approval to your projects! 2.5” squares just never seem to go away…I have a bin of them too…I keep using them but there’s always more. Pretty appliqué on the birthday quilt!

I like that green rick-rack around the border flowers a lot;))) [I am thinking of making rick-rack handles for my newly started pink baskets..??.]
Green seems just right for the month of May; everything here is "greening" up by the day. We got two large outside flower pots for our front walkway yesterday --I hope to plant azaleas in them...the stonescape is great looking but a bit bare looking...hoping these will dress it up and still easy on the upkeep...
Have a great weekend...hugs, Julierose

I think you found a perfect solution to your black & white fabric dilemma. I agree with Gemma, the pink and green flowers are perfect!

I need to check out my green scraps as I want to make some of the pieced blocks for the frog quilt. You are so right, scraps are pesky. You think you have them tamed and then you start something new and create more scraps. I like the appliqued border of the quilt.

You've been busy! All pretty green blocks. Great way using up those squares. I think the two different green, black and white blocks go together nicely. Beautiful border on the quilt, love the rick-rack. Cute Gemma approved the squares!

Your swirly polka dotted boy blocks are fun, Jenny. And someday you'll use up those squares (I laugh as I say that because I never do)! I really like the look of your appliqued borders, too. Hope you will show us that quilt before it is gifted!

That's a great idea to use the black and white dots for boy quilts! Thank you for sharing this. You gave me a great idea that I will copy--it has been said that imitation is the best form of flattery!

Well done and having Gemma give her approval is just icing on the cake. You are getting those bits and bobs used up and are finding all the colours you need for each and every month.

God bless.

Going green is going great! I like the mix of black and white prints in the blocks you're making. The more variety of prints, the happier, don't you think?

Do be sure and take a photo of your finished birthday quilt before you give it away. We would all love to see it. That border is gorgeous. She is going to love it and it will be treasured.

Great to see you keeping up with the colour challenges.
I don't think we will ever use up all the scraps we have, we just keep making more.

Nice scrap blocks! Good luck using up all the squares in the bag, I've got a project or two like that. Your applique border is fabulous! Love that rickrack. The birthday girl is very lucky.
