Orange is the chosen colour this month for June and I have to admit it's not really a colour I care for. But I found two shades of orange to stitch up a couple of blocks for my boy's white and black donation quilt.
Boy's blocks
Then I checked through my bag of 2.5in squares, looking for anything orange. Not a great deal of luck, I only found enough for two of these blocks.
Orange, tan and apricot, slim pickings indeed
As I've decided to split these blocks into girly shades, and other darker shades to make both a boy and a girl quilt, I'll need more blocks than originally thought. So I rummaged through the bag again, using any colours at all, and stitched up another 15 or so framed four patch blocks. Might as well get them done and out of the way, I know I've often said that I don't really enjoy stitching with little squares. I'll use them up as fast as I can, then they will be gone for good!
But wait, there's more
My crockpot (slow cooker) was full of orange coloured goodness last week when I cooked up some yummy pumpkin soup. I like to add cooked bacon and oinon to mine, and a little curry powder too. So nice, and there are several small containers in the freezer for me to enjoy for lunch later.
Pumpkin soup with a swirl of cream
Although it was fine and cool today, the weather this weekend is meant to be very cold and wild. With the Cook Strait ferries cancelled because of high swells, the weather front is approaching from the South Island with heavy snow down there. There is a sprinkling of snow on the Tararua Ranges behind my home, it looks so pretty glistening in the sunshine. I've changed my seasonal wall-hanging to my "Winter Welcome". Yes, I know we don't get snow on the ground here, but it is cute, I think. This kit was a gift and I enjoyed stitching it up.
Welcome to Winter

What a cute idea using the dots as dominoes, the snowman & church hanging is adorable,! Im not much of an "orange" person either so when orange rolls around I tone it down with peach ,I always have to purchase a bit of fabrics with orange color's
The bright orange looks great with the black dots. It really makes the blocks stand out.
Pumpkin soup on a cold day, delicious!
I have lots of orange scraps! Your orange soup looks delicious. I do the same thing…make a big pot of soup and then freeze it in single serving containers. Great for lunches later. I have a bin of 2.5” squares that never seem to deplete too. Have a good week. Sending hugs!
You’ve done well to make some orange blocks as well as more blocks for the donation quilts. It sounds like soup is the perfect choice for the weather you are experiencing and it is the ideal time to bring out your Winter hanger.
Orange is a hard colour to use so did great making your blocks. Good to have sewn up many more of various colours ready to make into a quilt.
Love.y winter wall hanging.
and there you are about to welcome winter and we are beginning to get the humidity of summer and storms have been in and out of the state for over a week now
hi! it's so nice to read your words again.
Mmm pumpkin soup, delicious. I thought I didn't have much orange fabric until I went through my scraps. It seems I rather like orange.
Nice ones! I really must get doing something!
I have very little orange and only a few small pieces of brown or yellow. Lovely soup and so good to have it in the freezer. Zero here this morning, in the far south daughter has had a small drop of snow.!!
Lovely blocks. Yum, I can almost smell the soup.
Fun to see what you pulled out for orange, Jenny! I think apricot is perfect for your four patch block. Pumpkin soup sounds yummy!
I don't have much orange either...got to love a pumpkin soup on a a cold day (keeping with the orange theme?? lol) ...its even cold in Brisbane.
Oh Jenny, you make me smile! I love orange! It's at the top of my three favorite colors. You'd probably feel sickened coming into my home and seeing a 22"-long wall of orange on the living room wall. :-) It's such a bright and cheery color. I can see how your stash is lacking in that color. Muddy shades of orange are not very appealing are they? But the exception is your pumpkin soup! It looks delicious, and perfect for warming up a cold winter day.
Cute blocks Jenny; I'm not a big orange fan too. Love cooking soup on a cold day or early summer day for that matter. I'm cooking a pea soup now in the crockpot. And I loved those stitched ornaments you showed in the last post.
Pumpkin soup sounds wonderful. I love your attitude toward little scraps--use them up and get rid of them! I just can't seem to keep ahead of them somehow lol. Stay warm!
The polka dot fabric is eye poppingly fun in the first blocks you showcased. I see you've had another busy week working on a variety of projects. The soup sounds delicious.
I like the polka dots together with orange, such happy blocks. The other blocks are great too. I've never been a soup person, but I love pumpkins, so maybe that will be a soup for me to enjoy. It's cold here too, wind from south-east and temperature has dropped 2-3 degrees. BRRR! Stay warm!
Pumpkin soup sounds delightful. Love your orange blocks. The oranges play perfectly with the black polka dots. Such a fabulous winter quilt as well. Enjoy your week. Hugs.
I really like the range of oranges, from very light to bright, that you used for your orange blocks. I think I should have done something similar. Maybe I will on the new few blocks.
Your framed 4-patches will make great quilts--bright and colorful.
I keep forgetting that the southern hemisphere is having winter now. In the midst of our upcoming summer I'll think of your "cold and wild" winter and wish to trade for a week.
That polka dot is a perfect center with all the rainbow! Great idea!!
The orange makes a lovely frame for the polka dots. I keep looking and admiring your framed 4 patch blocks. This could be a way I could use up my small squares as well. Need to think on it for a bit.
God bless.
I mainly use orange to make my Harley Davidson bike quilts. Itis a hard colour that we often don’t use. I made my pouch but will do some placemats. Loved the look of your pumpkin soup.
