A Big Bag of Scraps

I have a big bag full of scraps, lots of trimmings  and little leftovers from various projects. Occasionally I would tip everything out on the floor, looking for some particular colour, but really, it was a mess, and I was getting sick of it.

Full to overflowing

So one fine day, I took the bag out to the patio table, and tipped it all out, it was high time for a sort out.  The colours were all separated, and it was easy to tell that the neutrals were by far the largest pile.  My aim was to see how many 2.5in strips I had, so that I can start making some baby jelly roll quilts.  Sadly most of the strips were less than 2.5in, maybe I can make string blocks instead.

All those neutral strips can  be put to good use making some more of these cream coloured string blocks I'm using in another recent donation quilt.  This will be a good leader and ender project.

There are plenty of strips to make more of these

The neutrals were put back into the big bag, and the other scraps were bagged into colour groups, ready to be utilised.  I was amazed at just how much fabric there was, all those bits and pieces certainly add up, don't they.  As I used to tell Robin, I'll never run out of things to do!

All bagged in colour groups

That was a job worth doing. It makes you more inclined to use them now they are sorted.

A good sort out can be very inspiring. I'm sure you will use all of those bits and pieces.

Those neutrals are lovely with the contrasts, I also have LOTS of small pieces, but the other day looked for enough reds or browns to go into the " En Garde" Canadian Goose project and there wasn't enough of any one colour!!!

I had a big mess of scraps at one time too. When I decided to make RSC quilts blocks each month, I spent some time getting my scraps sorted by colour. So much easier to put the to good use! Well done for tackling this job! I have lots of neutral coloured scraps that I don’t use very often. I will have to figure something out for them. Gail at the cozy quilter.

You'll be able to be way more productive now that they are organized. I still need to get to the quilt room and get things sorted. Happy sewing. The neutrals will come in handy for your string quilt for sure.

All of the hard work is going to pay off. It is wonderful when they are color sorted and ready to work with. My two favorite things about using up scraps is: 1) It seems like you're making a quilt for free (no purchases necessary). 2) I love quilts made with as many different fabrics as possible, they make me think of the old fashioned quilts made my our mothers and grandmothers from whatever they had on hand.

I like the idea of sorting outside, less bending over & no vacuuming 😄

I have got so many strings to and all sizes making it hard to decide how to use. Good idea to bag them according to color

What a wonderful bag of scraps. Love those neutral blocks. Looks like a day well spent organizing . Grouping the fabrics in bags will make it easier in the future. I need to do the same. Enjoy your day, Jenny. Hugs.

Nice to see what you have at a glance rather than have them all in one bag.
