Ever Increasing Circles

While I’m waiting for my daughter’s birthday quilt to come back beautifully machine quilted from Rabbit’s Patch Quilting, I’m slowly working on yet another of my UFOs.  I’m being very brave and trying a new (to me) technique for the first time, “spiral quilting”.  This is where you start in the centre and gradually spiral out, and out, in ever increasing circles.

This is quite a slow process for me, with a lot of stopping to move the quilt around, and slowly start on my way again.  My lines aren’t perfect, but I’m slowly getting there.  I have found that I like to stop from time to time, give it all a good press on the back, and then the front, re-pin if needs be, then slowly continue on.  I might finish some time soon, before the birthday quilt comes back, if I’m lucky!

I had seen this technique at Amanda Jean’s blog Crazy Mom Quilts.  Check out her explanation of the technique here, if you would like to try it too.

Hello Jenny, you are very brave trying a new technique, your quilting is going to look lovely. Have you seen the new Westerlee rulers to help us quilters who like to quilt our own quilts. These rulers are fantastic, you need a particular foot for your machine then the rulers both straight & curved, there are different sizes for particular machines. Bill & Leonie West have a website & Youtube videos. I'm practising on the basic ruler and hope to eventually progress further. Best wishes from a very cold & wet Melbourne. Annette

Jenny, I'd not heard of this spiral quilting but I think I like it. As you know I'm trying to learn all about quilting a quilt. I'm having to make myself take pauses to readjust and relax; less unsewing that way. But your sewing looks like it's turning out nicely. Way to go!

I had seen that on Amanda's blog and thought it was a great idea for Baptist Fan, too. I don't think I'd ever do a really large quilt with a spiral, but I was thinking about Baptist Fan today, as I did my WFQ of straight lines. I love your quilt!
